The gate is the part of the fence you use every day

Fence panels stand still. Gates get opened, pushed, leaned on, and swung through hundreds of times a season, so they wear out first — and gate work is a service of its own. Two Brothers Fencing builds and hangs walk gates, double-drive gates, and pool access gates in wood, vinyl, aluminum, and chain link across Wilmington and the rest of our coastal service area.

Most gate calls start with a fence that already exists, so matching is half the job. We match picket profile, board spacing, height, color, and hardware — whether the gate belongs to a new residential fence project or a fence someone else installed years ago. Where an exact match is not possible, such as a discontinued vinyl profile or weathered lumber beside new boards, we say so up front.

Walk gates and double-drive gates

A walk gate usually runs three to five feet, sized for people, mowers, and trash cans. A double-drive gate is a pair of leaves meeting at a drop rod, typically ten to twelve feet — wide enough for a vehicle, boat, or trailer. The estimate measures the approach, swing room, and slope under the opening, because a gate that clears level ground can still drag on a rising grade. Recent projects are in our gallery; neighbors’ experiences are on our reviews page.

Gate Repair

Most “broken” gates are fixable

If the fence itself is sound, a gate problem is usually a hardware or post problem — faster and cheaper to fix than replace. Damage beyond the gate belongs on our fence repair page.

Sagging and dragging

Worn hinges, a racked frame, or a leaning hinge post let the latch side drop. Truss kits, heavier hinges, re-hanging, or resetting the post brings the gate back square.

Latches and hinges

Salt air is hard on hardware here. We replace corroded latches and hinges, and can step up to coastal-rated or self-closing hardware where it earns its keep.

Posts and openings

A gate is only as strong as the post it hangs on. We reset or replace rotted or undersized hinge posts, and can widen an opening when equipment access changes.

Custom and automated gate options

Not every opening fits a standard frame. We build custom gates for wider spans, arched or scalloped tops, decorative hardware, and heights matched to an existing fence line. On driveway gates, automation is worth a conversation — an opener, keypad, or remote turns a heavy double gate into something you never get out of the car for.

Automated and motorized options are scoped at the property, because the right setup depends on power at the gate, the weight and swing of each leaf, and how the entrance is used day to day. To explore layouts first, design a gate online with our gate builder and bring it to your estimate.

Can a sagging gate be fixed without replacing it?

Often, yes. Sag comes from worn hinges, a racked frame, or a leaning hinge post; upgraded hinges, a truss kit, or resetting the post fixes most gates. If the post is rotted or the frame has failed, a rebuilt gate on the existing opening is the better repair.

Can you build a gate to match my existing fence?

In most cases. Wood and chain link gates can usually match height, style, and hardware. Vinyl and aluminum depend on the profile and color still being available, and new material may look brighter than weathered fence until it ages. We explain what will blend before work starts.

How wide should a double-drive gate be?

It depends on what needs to pass through. Mowers and garden equipment usually need a five to six foot clear opening; vehicles, boats, and trailers typically call for ten to twelve feet. We measure the approach and swing room at the estimate so the opening works in daily use.

Do you handle automated or motorized gates?

Automated openers can be discussed at the estimate for driveway and custom gate projects. Power at the gate, opener type, gate weight, and daily use all shape the recommendation, so automation is scoped on site rather than quoted sight unseen.
